This is a great project for beginners and more advanced tailors alike, and will teach you how to construct a mid-19th Century wool flannel overshirt. These were very popular from the gold rush era of the 1840s through to the Civil War period, and are perfect for labor, recreation like fishing and hunting, militia use, and more.

- 2 – 3 yards wool flannel
- Thread
- 5 – 6 bone buttons
- ~ 1/8 yard brown polished cotton (optional)
- ~3 yards cotton muslin for fitting
- Quilting ruler
- Tailor’s chalk
