This is a great little project to construct a detachable collar that can be worn with just about any shirt to formalize it slightly. Based on an original collar. While its small size makes it an easy project (takes me about an hour and a half to make one), that same small size does demand greater accuracy, as being off by 1/16″ with your stitching in certain places will show. So this is recommended for the intermediate to advanced tailor.
The collar is one size fits all, attached in the front with a buttonhole to your top shirt button, and tied in the back with a linen tape.
Supply List
- ~1/4 yard white linen (what I’m using) or a medium / lightweight linen or cotton broadcloth
- 3/16″ linen stay tape
- Cotton or linen thread for sewing
- 1 yard silk buttonhole twist
- 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of paper for drafting
- Pencil
- Ruler
- 1/2″ chisel for cutting buttonholes (available at any hardware store)
- Block or scrap piece of wood
- Small hammer
